Saco Fire Station
Saco Central Fire Station was built in 1936 as part of a Federal Public Works
project as part of the new deal. Originally the building housed the Fire Department
on the Thornton Avenue side and Saco Publics works in the rear of the building
located on the Pleasant Street side. The building is located on the same site as
the former station. Since the old station was located adjacent to Thornton Avenue,
the rear of the original station was removed and the apparatus was kept in the
front of the original station which today is the apparatus apron. When the station
was complete the apparatus was moved out while the rest of the station was torn
down and the apparatus was backed into the new station. The magnificent old
building continues to meet the needs of today’s department with minor
modifications while maintaining the station’s historic past.
